How voting PDP candidates on Saturday can save Nigeria’s democracy — PDP Youth Leader

The Peoples Democratic Party has appealed to Nigerians to elect its governorship and state assemblies elections candidates in Saturday’s elections.

In a statement Thursday, the party’s National Youth Leader, Abdullahi MaiBasira, said by voting PDP candidates, Nigerians would be helping in saving and deepening the country’s democracy.
Mr. MaiBasira said, “In the ensuing transition, the Peoples Democratic Party has a role in it – one of safeguarding and deepening democracy in Nigeria and providing a more credible alternative
“On March 28, Nigerians expressed their preferred choice for the leadership of the country. And for the first time in the history of Nigerian democracy, a sitting President conceded an election and congratulated the incoming President of Nigeria.
“Our party has also done same. We should be proud of this legacy. This is the greatest triumph of democracy that has set the basis for future transitions in Nigeria. History will forever remain kind to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan for his efforts and commitment to the transformation of Nigeria and deepening of her democracy.
“Now, on April 11, about 48 hours from today, we shall again line up to exercise our democratic franchise. As youths within the PDP, we have seen and heard of series of defections of our members from across states and regions especially since after March 28. We have observed the changing phase of our democracy, as it relates to our party in the face of an impending transition. We shall not be deterred in our quest, commitment and believe that democracy is all about power to the people and our party believes in it
“Yet, we relish the achievements of our state administrators from Jigawa to Gombe, Akwa Ibom to Katsina.
“As young people, we also see the hope that the aspirations of Umar Nasko in Niger and Ramalan Yero in Kaduna could lead us. Despite our loss on March 28, one of our finest and leading young voices, Tony Nwolu made it in Lagos to the House of Representatives, representing Oshodi / Isolo federal constituency.
“We are fully aware and committed to the aspirations of Ambassador Bala Aboki in Kano and Onofiok Luke in Akwa Ibom amongst several others. These are the great possibilities that our party represents.
“We may have lost the polls some 12 days ago but the future of our party and our role in the nation’s democracy will be ours to rebuild and reorganize. For us to achieve and realize our future, on behalf of all the youth structures of our party, I enjoin us to go out enmasse on April 11 to vote for and mobilize for the PDP.
“We are a generation of people with consistency, party loyalty honour and perseverance. These now will be our hallmarks.
“We shall weather the storm, press home and engage in all efforts aimed towards rebuilding this truly national party post 29th May 2015.”
